Tips for stress free international travel

We all love to travel to new and exciting places. But when travelling abroad there are a lot of things to remember and what should be a life-affirming fun or productive for business, can turn out to be very stressful.
Here are our 5 tips to make sure your next trip is an enjoyable one.

Passports

Don’t try to travel if you have 6 months or less left on your passport. With the exception of the USA, many countries won’t permit a traveller to enter if their passport has an expiry date of fewer than 6 months. It is costly to renew your passport at the last minute, so allow at least 6 weeks for passport renewal and check the Government website for circumstances where you may need a countersignature.
It is also good practice to take a photocopy of your passport, keep it with your important travel documents and leave a copy at home too. This will make it much easier to resolve should the worse happen and you lose it.

Bank cards

Don’t forget to notify the bank of your travel itinerary so they don’t make incorrect assumptions and block your account due to unusual or suspicious activity. A fraud alert could freeze all your cards. To avoid your card being cloned, do not let a server in a shop or restaurant take your card away, they should bring the payment machine to you.
Ensure you have access to emergency funds in case the worst happens, or you can’t find a cash machine.

Mobile phones

Make sure your phone has an international data and call roaming plan before you leave, you don’t want an unexpectedly high bill when you arrive back home. If you don’t have an international data plan you have the option to turn off data roaming on your phone to avoid extra charges. Don’t forget your charger either!

Medical

Check with your doctor 4-6 weeks before you travel to see if there are any vaccinations you need. Take enough medical supplies for the duration of your visit and any unexpected delays. Check the National Travel Health Network and Centre and NHS Choices advice about travelling with medicines and contact the embassy, high commission or consulate of the country you’re travelling to if you need more information. Pack medicines in your hand luggage, in case your suitcase goes missing.

Packing

Don’t forget to pack a charger adapter and an extra set of clothes in your hand luggage. Ensure your suitcase stands out from the crowd with a colourful luggage label or strap so no-one else picks it up. Also, different countries have different restrictions, check what you can bring in and out of the country before you go.
