Royal Ascot the great sports-meets-fashion event takes place from 19th June to 23rd June in 2018, it is the best-attended race meet in Europe. Founded in 1711 by Queen Anne the very first event had just 7 runners, this year’s must-attend event will see over 500 horses running across 5 days.

1. This quintessentially British event will see attendees consume; 240,000 tea cakes, 120,000 buttermilk scones, 80,000 cups of tea and over 1.2 tonnes of English clotted cream.

2. The oldest race is the Gold cup which started in 1807.

3. There is a strict dress code. Ladies dresses must be knee length and strapless styles are not allowed. Gentlemen are required to wear a suit with jacket and trousers of the same colour and pattern and will be refused entry if not wearing socks.

4. Over 30,000 tweets were sent from Royal Ascot in 2016.

5. In 2017, Royal Ascot welcomed the jumpsuit as an acceptable item of clothing for the Royal Enclosure.

6. The Queen attends every year, it is one of her favourite sporting events.

7. The race has taken place at the same venue for most of its history, except in 2005 when it took place in York as the grandstand was being redeveloped.
